Valentine’s Day was a fun excuse for Kyle and I to get a little more dressed up and go to one of our favorite restaurants, The Lobster, for an early dinner! We had the dreamiest window seat and got to watch the sun set beyond the background of the Santa Monica Pier and beach :).

Hello From SLO!

Hello from San Luis Obispo!

I took an impromptu trip up the coast to SLO with Kyle since he had a business trip assigned to him from SpaceX and I had the week free without any shoots in my calendar :). He has just gotten back on Sunday from another work-related trip in San Francisco for a week, so I was more than happy to accompany him and get the chance to spend time with my favorite guy!

The drive up to SLO is a familiar one since it’s past Santa Barbara. Back when we were in school, we would usually make the drive at night to avoid traffic, so getting to take it easy and enjoy the views when the sun was up was an extra treat! You get the best of both worlds with gorgeous beaches as well as green mountains and fields! We drove past the UCSB campus and grabbed some Chipotle as a mid-day rest stop and it feels weird how much younger everyone there seems. Kyle and I were talking about how it doesn’t really feel like we’re getting older, just that everyone else seems to be getting younger haha.

Thinking Out Loud

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve participated in Amanda’s thinking out loud, but I’ve been wanting to share more about my “real life” behind all the food photos and couldn’t think of a better way to share the small + big things going on lately! Let’s jump right in.

Vegas

This last Friday I headed on a quick flight to Vegas to meet up with a bunch of girlfriends from college to let loose, dance, and just have an all around good time! We partied pretty aggressively and I think I ended up only getting about 4 hours of shuteye a night on average, so the amount of recovery sleep needed was REAL. I also think I did a bit of nerve damage to my feet since a few toes on my left foot are numb from the excessive heel-wearing :shock: (and YES, this is a real thing that I found out about after a little googling haha… I’m not crazy). Needless to say I felt like a zombie for the beginning of the week, but it was so worth it! I haven’t seen most of them since I graduated so girl time was much needed.

Blackberries

Lately I’ve been obsessed with blackberries. I bought a small container of them at Trader Joe’s a few weeks ago and had this fruit epiphany where I was like “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE”. They are so good and for some reason I just never ate them in the past. I’m not too into sour foods, so raspberries have never been my thing, so I think they turned me off from the berry train. They are so sweet and delicious, filling, and have tons of vitamins and antioxidants and fiber. I’m waiting for them to come back into season so I can go ham with eating them without paying that steep price. Come on, spring!

Workouts of Late

image2My exercise routine was pretty blah during college since my schedule was all over the place and I was constantly stressed and sleep deprived, but I finally feel like I’m in a groove with my exercise! Lately, Kyle and I have been really into BodyPump classes for a really awesome full-body weightlifting workout that pushes us. It always leaves me with that really great post-workout feeling and time flies since someone else is instructing me at a fast pace and music is blasting. Highly recommend!

Juice!

Okay, so I know I’m going to totally sound like I drank the juice kool aid with this one, but I ordered an 18 pack of cold-pressed juice after seeing a Groupon deal and can’t even describe how much higher my energy levels and mood are. The juices were meant for a 3 day cleanse, but I decided that going 3 days without eating just wasn’t what I was looking for and instead added 2 juices to my eats a day. I used to always hit the WORST afternoon slump and basically lost 2 hours of productivity from 2-4 p.m where I was just so tired. That slump is virtually gone and I feel like I jump out of my bed in the morning. My cravings for unhealthy food have also gone down and I feel like my tastebuds have been, in a way, reset. My whole body just feels so much more energized and refreshed! Since I’m not about to drop all that moolah on having juice shipped to me, Kyle and I are going to try it out ourselves and get our own juicer.

Calcium

One of my 2017 resolutions was to add more calcium to my diet. It is SO important for bone health (especially in women!) and ensuring that you have a high amount of mobility when you’re older. I want to be able to hike, play sports, do cartwheels, etc when I’m a grandma, so taking care of my bones when I’m young and able to strengthen them is super important to me. It’s actually one of the easiest fixes ever (along with lifting weights) with the addition of two calcium gummies to my diet in the morning. They taste JUST like candy, making it the most delicious health fix ever. I look forward to eating them every morning because they are that delicious ;).

And just like that, we are on well on our way through 2017! I know it’s cliche, but I always get so PUMPED at the start of every New Year. I’m all about goal setting and resolutions and I love the idea of a fresh start, even if it’s just in my head.

Like the majority of Americans, high up on my list is improving my health! I think we should always strive for a healthier life, whether that for you is practicing yoga on a regular basis, taking time in the morning for a walk or run, eating more whole grains, drinking more water, or making sure to practice self-care and to take care of your mental well-being. For me, 2017 is the year of improving my bone health and eating more fruits and veggies! I’ve been taking BodyPump classes regularly at my gym 2-3 times a week and bought some delicious calcium gummies (they taste like candy so easiest goal to achieve ever) to work on that goal. The first class I ever had in college was a health class and my professor engrained in me how absolutely vital bone health is for women and how huge of an impact it can play in your mobility and quality of life when you’re older. His words have been in my head for the last 5 years, so I decided to make a conscious decision to work on ensuring I’m doing cartwheels when I’m 80 ;).
